Hand-knotted carpets

Hand-knotted Persian rugs are a sign of quality craftsmanship and stand the test of time. The first written mention of Persian carpets is almost 2500 years old, when the Greek author Xenophon described them as valuable enough to serve as diplomatic gifts. The Persian rug that has caught your attention is perhaps valued for the rustic roots of the nomadic tribes responsible for knotting it. Or maybe you're drawn to a rug with more complex color palettes and finer yarns, typical of the work of skilled village weavers. Whatever the case, chances are there is a rug that will add a unique touch to the elegance of your home.

Handmade rugs come in all shapes and sizes. The price and quality of each one depends on several factors related to the way they are made. You can choose from a variety of handmade oriental rugs depending on the look you want to achieve or that suits your home. Here are the different types of handmade rugs :

Hand-tufted rugs: Hand-tufted rugs are made using a tool that secures and inserts the threads into the backing, usually canvas. The back of these rugs usually has stickers or painted on it to ensure the gauge stays in place as the thread does not become knotted. These carpets are not considered “oriental carpets”.

Hand-knotted carpets: In a hand-knotted carpet, each thread is individually knotted by the weaver. Each thread knot is tightly tied around a pair of threads, which is the vertical thread that is laid on the loom on which the rug is woven. No mechanical tools are used in its manufacture, so it is considered a hand-knotted rug.

A hand knotted rug will always be more expensive than a tufted rug. It is more time consuming to produce and more durable. These rugs are really worth the money! If you want a rug that will last you for years, a hand-knotted rug is the right choice.

Number of Knots in a Rug: The number of knots refers to “knots per square inch”. If the pattern is complex and intricate, more knots are needed to make the pattern look beautiful. The finest carpets can have 50 to 100 knots per inch.

What are these rugs made of?
Wool and silk are two of the most popular materials for oriental rugs. Wool is the softest, most comfortable and most durable material that can be used as the base and main material for these rugs. Silk is often used as a design accent to add a new element of texture and color. Another strong and eye-catching material used to add texture or color is the fiber called "Allo" or Himalayan nettle.
