Sabzevar or Sabzewar carpets
History of Sabzevar carpets
The Persian province of Khorasan is the largest province of the Persian. It covers the north-east of the country. Many beautiful carpets come from this region of Persia. The capital is Mashad, which is also where most of these rugs are sold daily. Other centers of carpet manufacture in this region are cashmar (Turshis), Mood, Sabzevar, Ghain and Birjand, most of which are located near Mashad. Many Baloch carpets are also woven in this province by Baloch nomads living in more southern regions.
In 1722 Persia was invaded by the Afghans. This event left the country in a state of political confusion and the carpet industry in a dilapidated state for many years, particularly in established regions such as Mashhad.
Despite the massive invasion, Khorasan and many other regions managed to bounce back and the carpet industry thrived, while Iran's royal courts did everything in their power to bring this fine art back to the country. Oftentimes, Iranian kings like Shah Abass would confiscate and destroy inferior carpets and those with inferior dyeing techniques to ensure the integrity of this ancient Persian art was not lost.
Many different types of handmade carpets, ranging from medium to fine, are produced in the sprawling Persian province of Khorasan.
However, all are very robust and indestructible. The carpets woven in cities like Kashmar, Mashad, Mood, Sabzevar and Birjand are generally of better quality than the carpets woven by the nomads of the region. Although the nomads originally wove these carpets for their own use, the cities adapted this talent and perfected it into an art form.
Characteristics of Sabzevar carpets
material and knots
Almost all of these carpets consist of a wool pile and a basic weave (warp and weft) of cotton. On extremely rare occasions, silk may be included in these rugs as part of the pile, the backing, or the entire rug. However, this is very unlikely unless the pieces are significantly older than a few centuries. Wool, on the other hand, is very shiny and soft and is used exclusively by the Khorasan people. This fine wool combined with beautiful patterns and sophisticated craftsmanship result in these exquisite rugs.
The colors
Almost all colors can be found in the different carpets of this type.
The design and the pattern
These carpets do not have the traditional pattern of a sabzevar. Rather, they adopt the patterns of other cities in Persia. This teppich is great for adding a touch of class to a room where elegance is important.
