Description
Tabriz or Tabriz teppich
Tabriz carpet
history / background
Tabriz is the dominant city in the northwest of Persian/Persia and the second largest city in Persia. Tabriz has been a center for the Persian carpet trade for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The carpets from Tabriz become symmetrical tied. The quality extends across all levels, from bazaar quality to some of the finest carpets woven in Persia.
Historically, Persia or Persia is divided into four major regions. For most of the last 2500 years, the dominant region was either Tabriz or Khorasan. Tabriz is both a major city and the most important city in Persian Azerbaijan. When I say Azerbaijan, I must note that Azerbaijan extended to the southern part of Georgia, Dagestan, Azerbaijan. Although Tabriz is the center of a much smaller area, it remains the second largest city in modern Persia.
Tabriz is probably the most prolific carpet production center in the world and certainly one of the oldest. This magical city was founded over a thousand years ago.
After numerous invasions, occupations and wars, Tabriz adopted the old techniques of the past and built a huge carpet export industry. The heyday of Persian carpet weaving was during the Safavid dynasty (1499-1722) when the Safavids overthrew the Turks who had occupied Tabriz. They gave the city one of the first royal workshops, making it the artistic center of Persian culture. Despite all subsequent conquests and political restructuring, Tabriz managed to keep these old traditions alive.
Today, many of the rugs made in Tabriz emulate the artistic legacy of the Safavid Persian rug, and when a designer, anywhere in the world, wants to commission a specific handwoven pattern, Tabriz is the city they visit.
As a sign of their pride in producing high-quality carpets, Tabriz master weavers often weave their signature into part of the carpet edge. Of course, these signatures can also be found on extremely fine carpets made in other cities, but a signature on the “ceremonial” border of a Tabriz naqsheh is the height of formality and sophistication.
The material for the pile of these rugs is wool, silk or a combination of both. A beautiful blend of Kurkish wool and silk is most commonly found in high-quality Tabriz, while wool is only used in medium-quality carpets. In the finest rugs, the base of the rug is pure silk rather than cotton, and some even have 18 or 24 karat gold threads woven into the base, at 300 to 800 KPSI, which is not uncommon. The only carpets that can be compared to a good Tabriz are Isfahan, Kashan, Kerman, Qums and Dwarf. The most spectacular carpets are the Nagsheh (some of the hundreds of beautiful designs are still privately owned), complex and simple mahi (the decorator's carpet) or the beautiful Dome, which represents the interior architecture of a mosque.
